The United States Department of State is responsible for issuing and renewing passports for US citizens.

On their website, the Department of State outlines the requirements for the passport photo you must provide:

  • A recent color photograph of the applicant's face
  • The pass photo must be 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 cm) in size
  • The background of the photo must be plain white or off-white
  • The applicant must be facing directly towards the camera with a neutral expression
  • No glasses with tinted lenses or any other items that may obstruct identification can be worn in the photograph
  • The photograph must clearly show the applicant's full face, from the top of their hair to the bottom of their chin
  • The resolution of the passport photo must be high-quality (at least 600 pixels per inch)
  • The photograph must be printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper
